This is the most beautiful structure on the property. Built by craftsmen of the time by hand, without any nails or screws, about 200 years ago. The Heritage Barn offers an impressive glimpse into Ottawa’s unique heritage. The barn is now used as picturesque, rustic space. We host our Mother’s Day Brunch, various music events and wedding receptions in this beautiful space.
History of the Heritage Barn
The Herb Garden is pleased to share a brief history of The Meehan Farm. The barns are still well loved and used for special events, happy memories continue to be created in them nearly 200 years later.
Michael Meehan came to Canada in 1823 from County Cork, Ireland. In 1824, at the age of 19. By 1825, Meehan built a cedar log barn using dovetail joinery. The farm’s history illustrates the early Irish settlement of Huntley Township, while the design of the barn illustrates 19th century farming methods.
